Objective To assess the vision-related quality of life(VRQL) in patients with age-related maculopathy (AMD) and the related factors in Shanghai. Methods The VRQL of 105 patiens with AMD and 105 without (the control group) in Shanghai was investigated via Chinese-version low vision quality of life questionnaire. Resutls The Cronbach α coefficient of the questionnaire is 0.97 in the patients with AMD, whose scores of the various quality of life were significantly lower than those in the control group. The more the exudative defect happened, or the longer the disease course developed, the lower the sccores were. All the scores of the scales and the total questionnaire were significantly related to the better or worse monocular visual acuity. The better monocular visual acuity was the first independent risk factor affecting all aspects of VRQL in pateints with AMD. Conclusions Decreased visual acutiy may gradually impair the VRQL in patients with AMD. Chinese-version questionnaire of low vision quality of life can provide the general information of the VRQL in patients with AMD.(Chin J Ocul Fundus Dis,2004,20:303-306)
ObjectiveTo survey the current asthma impact on quality of life and related factors in China. MethodsTwo thousand and thirty-four asthmatic patients, from bronchial asthma prevalence epidemiology survey in the population over 14 years old in 8 areas of China from 2009 to 2013, were enrolled. The data about medical resource use, control status and quality of life were collected by detailed questionnaire and analysed using the Epidata database and SAS 9.2 software. ResultsOut of the 2034 asthma patients, 1213 patients (59.6%) reported that their activities including entertainment, learning, fertility and employment were limited due to asthma. In the four aspects of entertainment, education, family and employment, 688 patients (33.8%) had one limited activity in one aspect, 165 patients (8.19%) had most of activities limited in one aspect, 246 patients (12.1%) had limited activities in two or three aspects, 114 patients (5.6%) had limited activities in all aspects. One hundred and eighty-one patients (8.9%) needed help in daily life, such as cooking, shopping, doing housework. Seventy-one patients (3.5%) even needed help in eating, personal hygiene, toilet, and their daily activities were remarkably restricted. Eighty-one patients (4.0%) had motive of suicide. Aging, comorbidity, and medication use were the most important factors. ConclusionAsthma has a significant negative effects on the life and emotion of patients, and proper control of comorbidity and regular treatment of asthma are effective ways to improve the life and emotional state of patients with asthma.
Objective To summarize the advances in the clinical application of the quality of life(QOL) assessment after surgery of rectal cancer.MethodsThe recent literatures on the advances in the studies on the QOL assessment following the treatment of rectal cancer were reviewed. Results After surgery of rectal cancer, the patients might suffer from short and/or long term of various complications affecting the physical, social and psychological aspects of their well-being. The QOL assessment included many aspects of the studies. Global QOL scores as measured by the specific questionnaires improved significantly after surgery. It had provided clinical evidences of therapeutic methods, operative treatment of choices and bowel reconstructed procedures for the patients with rectal cancer. Conclusion The QOL studies after surgery for rectal cancer are of increasing importance. Apart from the improvements of the survival rates and the recurrencefree period, it is essential to provide an acceptable QOL postoperatively. The QOL assessment for the guidance of clinical treatment should be discussed routinely for a patient with potentially curable rectal carcinoma so that the excellent outcome could be achieved.
Objective To investigate the quality of life (QOL) of Beichuan cadres 1 year after Wenchuan earthquake, so as to provide references for promoting psychological intervention and improving QOL. Methods With the adoption of WHOQOL-BREF, questionnaire survey on basic conditions of cadre victims, and PCL-C scale, cross-section survey was conducted for 2 055 cadres of Beichuan public institutions in aspects of their QOL, social demographic characteristics and psychological trauma. Results a) Compared with domestic norm, although the Beichuan cadres had higher score in social relation domain (14.31 ± 2.59, Plt;0.01), their QOL scores in each dimensions (physical domain score: 14.16 ± 2.43; psychological domain score: 13.79 ± 2.59, environmental domain score: 11.20 ± 2.74) were lower with significant difference (Plt;0.01); b) The group with population under the age of 30 scored higher than other age groups in the psychological and environmental domains; men scored higher than women in the psychological domain; the widowed group scored lower than other groups in all domains; the Han nationality group scored higher than the Qiang nationality group in all domains; the primary education group scored lower than other groups in the social relation domain; the group with relatives, houses and physical loss or damage scored lower than the non-loss group in all domains; and the higher the score in PCL-C, the lower the scores in all domains (all Plt;0.05). Conclusion Beichuan cadres are severely affected in their physical, psychological and environmental domains even one year after Wenchuan earthquake, especially the female, the Qiang nationality, the old, the lost, and the psychological injured cadres are more badly affected with worse QOL, so those population should be concerned in particular with sustainable psychological service and other measures. The finding of social relation domain score being higher than general population suggests that it is important to promote the satisfaction with social relation through the timely effective support from both government and civil society, and the resettlement of sample housing area as well.
Objective To explor the influence of the hospital-community-family mental rehabilitation mode on the quality of life of patients with schizophrenia. Methods We selected 101 patients diagnosed as schizophrenia according to ICD-10, who were hospitalized in mental health center of the West China Hospital and took part in rehabilitation voluntarily after discharge. Those patients were randomly assigned to two groups. Hospital-community-family mental rehabilitation mode intervention was applied to the patients based on inpatient rehabilitation in the trial group (n=52), while inpatient rehabilitation alone was applied in the control group (n=49). The total score of quality of life, psycho-social dimension, motivation and energy dimension, score of mental disability and social function, and family social care index were recorded. Then, statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 17.0 software. Results After 3 months and 6 months, the trial group had lower scores of the total score of quality of life, psycho-social domain, and motive and energy dimension than those of the control group (Plt;0.05). After 6 months, the trial group had lower scores of mental disability and social function (Plt;0.05) but a higher score of family social care index (Plt;0.05). The scores of WHO-DSA II and SQLS were positively correlated, while the scores of APGAR and SQLS were negatively correlated. Conclusion The integral mode of hospital-community-family mental rehabilitation effectively improves the quality of life of patients with schizophrenia, which also positively improves patients’ rehabilitation.
ObjectiveTo assess the fatigue in patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS), and analyze the factors caused fatigue and the relationship between quality of life (QOL) and fatigue. MethodsOne hundred and sixty-nine patients with OSAHS and 78 subjects without OSAHS diagnosed by polysomnography (PSG) between December 2010 and March 2011 in West China Hospital were recruited in the study. Fatigue was assessed by using multidimensional fatigue inventory (MFI), excessive daytime sleepiness by Epworth sleepiness scale(ESS), QOL by functional outcomes of sleep questionnaire (FOSQ). ResultsFatigue in the patients with OSAHS was more severe than that of the controls (51.06±13.39 vs. 44.82±9.81, P < 0.001), but no difference was revealed in the patients with different degree of OSAHS. Fatigue was positively correlated with ESS score(r=0.210), total sleep time intervals(r=0.156), and the ratio of time of SpO2 below 90% in total sleep time(r=0.153)(P < 0.05), and was negatively correlated with the average oxygen saturation(r=-0.171, P < 0.05) and all subscales of FOSQ(P < 0.01). ConclusionsFatigue in patients with OSAHS is more severe than that of controls. Fatigue can significantly reduce QOL, and the impact is greater than that of excessive daytime sleepiness.
ObjectiveTo systematically review the association between chronotype and quality of life in adolescents. MethodsPubMed, EMbase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CBM, WBM, VIP, WanFang Data and CNKI databases were electronically searched to collect studies on the association between chronotype and quality of life in adolescents from inception to April 21, 2022. Two reviewers independently screened the literature, extracted data and assessed the risk of bias of the included studies. A qualitative systematic review was then performed. ResultsA total of 7 studies were included. The results of systematic review suggested that the association between chronotype and quality of life in adolescents was statistically significant. Moreover, chronotype completely affected quality of life via insomnia symptoms, sleep related irrational cognition and general self-efficacy. ConclusionCurrent evidence shows that chronotype is associated with quality of life in adolescents. Due to the limited quality and quantity of the included studies, more high quality studies are needed to verify the above conclusion.
ObjectiveTo explore the impact of the preoperative nutritional status on quality of life of colorectal cancer patients. MethodsIn this study, patients diagnosed definitely as colorectal cancer were enrolled from September 2012 to December 2012 in this hospital.NRS-2002 was used to assess the preoperative nutritional status, and QLQ-C30 was used to assess the quality of life. ResultsForty-four patients were enrolled in this study and divided into two groups based on NRS-2002 preoperative nutritional status evaluation scores:mild nutritional risk group had 27 patients who got 1 point, and moderate-severe nutritional risk group had 17 patients who got 2 point or over it.Patients in moderate-severe nutritional risk group were significantly older than the mild nutritional risk group (P=0.001), but there were no statistical differences between the two groups in gender (P=0.718), TNM stage (P=0.302), differentiation degree (P=0.564), preoperative medical complications (P=0.070), postoperative complications[NS (not significant)], and stoma (P=0.786).There were no statistical differences between the two groups in quality of life, too (P > 0.05). ConclusionsThis study don't get the conclusion that there is any relationship between nutritional status and quality of life of the colorectal cancer patients. And maybe it is effected by the too small sample size and single time of accessing. Therefore, the further research by expanding sample size, using more kinds of assessment tools, and selecting different time to explore the impact of the preoperative nutritional status on quality of life of colorectal cancer patients are necessary.
Objective To investigate the general state, psychologic status and health related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients with post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN), and explore the influencing factors on HRQOL and their major and minor relationship. Methods From August 2014 to August 2015, a questionnaire survey was conducted to patients with PHN. The data of the patients’ general situation was colleted, the psychologic status was assessed by Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), and the HRQOL of the patients was assessed by 36-item Short Form Survey. One-way ANOVA and stepwise regression analysis were used to analyze the influencing factors of HRQOL. Results A total of 177 questionnaires were issued, and 158 were recovered with a response rate of 89.3%. The average score of HRQOL of the 158 patients was 513.67±119.79, and the average score of SDS was 43.65±11.34. SDS scores showed no depression in 41 patients (25.9%), mild depression in 47 (29.7%), moderate depression in 39 (24.8%), and severe depression in 31 (19.6%). Whether receiving regular treatment, course of PHN, SDS score, physical exercise, sleep time and age were the main influencing factors of HRQOL. Conclusions Most patients with PHN suffer from depressive symptoms with poor HRQOL scores. Receiving early treatment with integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine, strengthening exercise, ensuring adequate sleep and receiving psychological counseling can significantly improve the HRQOL of PHN patients.
Objective To compare BODE index with GOLD staging for the severity evaluation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ( COPD) . To investigate the relationship between BODE index and quality of life. Methods A total of 100 patients with stable COPD were enrolled. All participants were examined with lung function test and St George’s Respiratory Questionnaire ( SGRQ) for evaluation of quality of life. BODE index and it’s four components including body mass index( BMI) , airflow obstruction ( FEV1%pred) , dyspnea( MMRC) , and exercise capacity( 6MWD) were calculated. The participants were divided into four groups of severity using GOLD guidelines and BODE index quartiles. Results The associations between SGRQ total score and SGRQ subscales, and BODE index were significant( P lt;0. 01) .BODE index was a significant predictor of the quality of life, explaining 41. 3% of the total score of the SGRQ ( P lt;0. 01) . However, GOLD classification showed a correlation only with SGRQ activity score ( P lt;0. 05) but not with other SGRQ scores. There were significant differences in SGRQ total score and SGRQsubscales between different severity groups of BODE index( P lt;0. 01) . But there was no difference in SGRQ score between different severity groups of GOLD classification, except SGRQ activity score. Conclusion BODE scoring system is better correlated with the quality of life as assessed by the disease severity inpatients with COPD than the GOLD staging criteria.
