ObjectiveTo analyze the impact of the residence of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) on surgical characteristics in the current version Database from Colorectal Cancer (DACCA). MethodsAccording to the established screening conditions, the patients with CRC were collected from the updated version of DACCA on January 23, 2023. The analysis indicators enrolled in this study included: the grouping indicator was residence, the surgical characteristic indicators included the surgical timing, surgical nature, expanded resection, intersphincteric resection (ISR) type, patient’s willingness of preserving the anus, and whether preserving the anus. The patients were categorized into three groups based on the residence: inside Chengdu City, outside Chengdu City within Sichuan Province, and outside Sichuan Province. The surgical characteristic indicators of patients with CRC from different residences were comparatively analyzed. ResultsA total of 6 832 analyzable data rows were enrolled. The results of statistical analysis revealed the following findings: there were no statistical differences in the surgery timing and surgery nature among the patients with colon cancer or rectal cancer from the different residences (Surgery timing: H=1.665, P=0.435; H=4.153, P=0.125. Surgery nature: χ2=1.586, P=0.453; χ2=0.990, P=0.610); For the patients with rectal cancer from the different residences, the distributions of the ISR type (H=0.514, P=0.773), patients’ willingness of preserving the anus (χ2=1.437, P=0.487), and whether preserving the anus (χ2=5.513, P=0.064) had no statistical differences. In addition, although there was no statistical difference in the distribution of expanded resection or not among the patients with rectal cancer in different residences (χ2=2.363, P=0.307), it was found that there was statistical difference in the distribution of enlarged resection or not among the patients with colon cancer in different residences (χ2=17.324, P<0.001). ConclusionsFrom the data analysis in DACCA, there are not statistical differences in surgical characteristic indicators such as surgical timing, surgical nature, ISR type, patients’ willingness of preserving the anus, and whether preserving the anus among patients with colon or rectal cancer from different residences. However, the proportion of underwent expanded surgery in the colon cancer patients who from outside Sichuan Province as compared with inside Sichuan Province is relatively higher, this suggests that surgical difficulty is more difficult for the patients from outside Sichuan Province.
ObjectiveTo elucidate the clinical and pathological features and review the progress of diagnosis and treatment in patients with brain metastasis (BM) from colorectal cancer (CRC), so as to provide a reference for the whole process management for patients with BM from CRC in China.MethodThe latest research results and previous literatures about patients with BM from CRC were reviewed.ResultsThe prognosis of BM from CRC was poor, its molecular pathological mechanism was complex and diverse, and some risk factors associated with the occurrence of BM had been identified. Typical imaging features of BM from CRC were helpful to the diagnosis of patients. At present, radiotherapy was still the main treatment. Bevacizumab treatment or immunotherapy combined with radiotherapy was expected to improve the survival of BM from CRC.ConclusionScientific and standardized prevention, diagnosis, and treatment are beneficial to reduce incidence of BM from CRC and improve survival.
Coronary heart disease is the second leading cause of death worldwide. As a preventable and treatable chronic disease, early screening is of great importance for disease control. However, previous screening tools relied on physician assistance, thus cannot be used on a large scale. Many facial features have been reported to be associated with coronary heart disease and may be useful for screening. However, these facial features have limitations such as fewer types, irregular definitions and poor repeatability of manual judgment, so they can not be routinely applied in clinical practice. With the development of artificial intelligence, it is possible to integrate facial features to predict diseases. A recent study published in the European Heart Journal showed that coronary heart disease can be predicted using artificial intelligence based on facial photos. Although this work still has some limitations, this novel technology will be promise for improving disease screening and diagnosis in the future.
ObjectiveTo establish the model of compression fracture of acetabular dome, and to measure the contact characteristics of acetabular weight-bearing area of acetabulum after 3 kinds of internal fixation.MethodsSixteen fresh adult half pelvis specimens were randomly divided into 4 groups, 4 specimens each group. Group D was the complete acetabulum (control group), and the remaining 3 groups were prepared acetabular dome compression fracture model. The fractures were fixed with reconstruction plate in group A, antegrade raft screws in group B, and retrograde raft screws in group C. The pressure sensitive films were attached to the femoral head, and the axial compression test was carried out on the inverted single leg standing position. The weight-bearing area, average stress, and peak stress were measured in each group.ResultsUnder the loading of 500 N, the acetabular weight-bearing area was significantly higher in group D than in other 3 groups (P<0.05), and the average stress and peak stress were significantly lower than in other 3 groups (P<0.05). The acetabular weight-bearing area were significantly higher in group B and group C than in group A, and the average stress and peak stress were significantly lower than in group A (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the above indexes between group B and group C (P>0.05).ConclusionFor the compression fracture of the acetabular dome, the contact characteristics of the weight-bearing area can not restore to the normal level, even if the anatomical reduction and rigid internal fixation were performed; compared with the reconstruction plate fixation, antegrade and retrograde raft screws fixations can increase the weight-bearing area, reduce the average stress and peak stress, and reduce the incidence of traumatic arthritis.
OBJECTIVE This paper was to study the biological characteristics of the transformed human embryonic tendon cells, the relation between cell growth and culture conditions, and to compare these features with that of human embryonic tendon cells. METHODS The pts A58H plasmid had successfully used to transform a tendon cell line from human embryo in our past work. The human embryonic tendon cells and the transformed human embryonic tendon cells were cultured in vitro. In different culture conditions, the growth curve were drawn respectively. Population dependence and proliferation capability of the cells were investigated through plate cloning test and soft agar culture. The collagen secreted by cells was identified by immunohistochemical method. RESULTS In routine culture condition, the growth properties of the human embryonic tendon cell and transformed cells were almost identical. The growth properties of the transformed cells were not changed when the cells were frozen storage. There were changes of growth characteristics of the transformed cells when the culture temperature was changed. The transformed cells could subcultured continually and permanently. The proliferation capability of the transformed cells were ber than that of the human embryonic tendon cells. Moreover, the growth of the transformed cells was serum-dependent, and the phenomenon of contact inhibition was observed. The transformed cells were not able to grow on soft agar culture. They had the capacity of secreting collagen type I. CONCLUSION The transformed human embryonic tendon cells could be subcultured continually and permanently, and their growth could be controlled by changing their culture conditions and they had no malignant tendency in biological characteristics. They could be taken as an ideal experimental material for tendon engineering.
ObjectiveTo investigate the clinicopathologic and epidemiological characteristics of patients with gastric cancer at our hospital in the past six years. Methods A total of 958 patients with gastric cancer were selected from January 2004 to December 2009 and clinicopathologic characteristics such as basic data, pathological type, tumor location, and TNM stage were retrospectively analyzed. ResultsOf the 958 patients,697 cases (72.8%) were male and 261 cases (27.2%) were female, and the age ranged from 26 to 91 years old (mean 62.6 years old). The occurrence rate of gastric cancer was higher in the patients of 46-65 years old (49.4%, 473/958) than that in the patients of ≥66 years old (42.3%, 405/958) and ≤45 years old (8.3%, 80/958). Regarding pathologic type, the majority of advanced gastric cancers (70.1%) were Borrmann Ⅱ, the adenocarcinoma and signetring cell carcinoma accounted for 82.3% and 7.8%, respectively. The cancer of gastric cardia accounted for 53.0%. Stagestratified analysis revealed that the majority of gastric cancers (47.4%) were stage Ⅲ. Conclusion①A prevalence of gastric cancer is found in middle, elderly male patients. Poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma in cardia is prominent. ②Patients with high malignant ganstrie cancer are younger. ③The majority of patients who underwent the surgical treatments have advanced or metastatic tumor, therefore it is necessary to improve the early diagnosis of gastric cancer.
ObjectiveTo review the characteristics of registered industry-sponsored clinical trials of pediatric drugs and vaccines in China and to provide references for promoting the development of new pediatric drugs. MethodsWe searched ClinicalTrials.gov and the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry for completed registered industry-sponsored clinical trials of pediatric drugs and vaccines from the database inception to September 11, 2022. Data including the date the trial was first posted, product type (drug or vaccine), sample size, and other information to describe the general characteristics of pediatric clinical trials were collected. The studies were divided into 2 phases based on the trial posted date, 2005―2010 and 2011―2022, reflecting the enactment of pediatric drug clinical trial policies in recent years. The quality of trial registration and the main characteristics of interventional trials in the 2 phases were then compared. Exploring the results attached to industry and non-industry sponsored clinical trials. ResultsData for 145 trials were collected, and the largest proportion (63.4%) involved vaccines. Randomized control trial (RCT) was the study type with the highest percentage (68.3%). The average report completion rate for registered interventional trials was 81.0%. Compared with 2005―2010, the percentage of average report completions, pediatric drug clinical studies, multicenter, RCTs, and double-blinded registered trials increased in 2011―2022. The proportion of positive outcomes in pediatric clinical trials sponsored by industries was higher than those sponsored by non-industry. ConclusionThe majority of completed pediatric clinical trials sponsored by industries are for vaccines, in line with the promotion of pediatric policies. The quality of trial registration has improved, but not significantly, and some characteristics of trial design have changed. The proportion of positive outcomes in pediatric clinical trials sponsored by industries is higher. And further promotion of pediatric clinical trials is needed.

The data items analyzed included: residence, precancerous lesions, family history of cancer, tumor location, tumor morphology, tumor orientation, tumor pathology, tumor differentiation and preoperative TNM staging. According to the regional distribution of colorectal cancer patients' residence in the database, they were divided into Sichuan group and non-Sichuan group, and the Sichuan group was further divided into Sichuan-Chengdu group and Sichuan-non-Chengdu group. Results The DACCA database was filtered by conditions to obtain 7 232 valid data. ① The composition ratio of precancerous lesions in different places of residence: The difference between the Sichuan group and the non-Sichuan group was statistically significant (χ2=14.462, P=0.003), and the difference between the Sichuan-Chengdu group and the Sichuan-non-Chengdu group was not statistically significant (χ2=7.591, P=0.101). ② Composition ratio of family history of cancer in different places of residence: In the family history of cancer in oneself, the difference between Sichuan group and non-Sichuan group as well as between Sichuan-Chengdu group and Sichuan-non-Chengdu group were not statistically significant (χ2=1.121, P=0.606; χ2=1.047, P=0.621). In the family history of cancer in relatives, the differences in the composition ratio of different tumor histories between the Sichuan group and the non-Sichuan group, and between the Sichuan-Chengdu group and the Sichuan-non-Chengdu group were not statistically significant (χ2=0.813, P=0.692; χ2=2.696, P=0.262). ③ Tumor site composition ratios in different places of residence: The difference between Sichuan group and non-Sichuan group was not statistically significant (χ2=0.476, P=0.490), and the difference between Sichuan-Chengdu group and Sichuan-non-Chengdu group was statistically significant (χ2=36.216, P<0.001). ④ Tumor morphology composition ratio in different places of residence: The difference between Sichuan group and non-Sichuan group was statistically significant (χ2=19.560, P<0.001), and the difference between Sichuan-Chengdu group and Sichuan-non-Chengdu group was not statistically significant (χ2=5.377, P=0.247). ⑤ Composition ratio of tumor orientation in different places of residence: The differences in composition ratio of tumor orientation between Sichuan group and non-Sichuan group and between Sichuan-Chengdu group and Sichuan-non-Chengdu group were statistically significant (χ2=17.484, P=0.005; χ2=26.820, P<0.001). ⑥ Composition ratio of tumor pathological properties under different residence: The differences in the comparison of pathological properties between Sichuan group and non-Sichuan group as well as between Sichuan-Chengdu group and Sichuan-non-Chengdu group of CRC patients were not statistically significant (χ2=8.136, P=0.408; χ2=7.278, P=0.506). ⑦ Composition ratio of tumor differentiation degree under different residence groupings: the differences in the composition ratio of tumors with different degrees of differentiation were not statistically significant between Sichuan group and non-Sichuan group, and between Sichuan-Chengdu group and Sichuan-non-Chengdu group (H=0.289, P=0.591; H=0.156, P=0.693). ⑧ The composition ratio of TNM staging of tumors before operation in different places of residence: between the Sichuan group and the non-Sichuan group, the difference in the composition ratio of preoperative TNM staging of CRC patients was statistically significant (H=8.023, P=0.005); between the Sichuan-Chengdu group and the Sichuan-non-Chengdu group, the difference in the composition ratio of preoperative TNM staging of CRC patients was not statistically significant (H=0.218, P=0.640). Conclusions Data analysis in DACCA reveal multiple associations between the place of residence and oncological characteristics of CRC patients. There are differences in the composition of the types of precancerous lesions among CRC patients in different places of residence. The proportion of CRC is higher in the family history of cancer. In terms of the site of tumor occurrence, the proportion of tumors located in the rectum is higher than that in the colon. In the composition of tumor morphology in all regions, the ulcerative type is the most frequent. The composition of tumor orientation is different in patients with CRC, and those who has involved a circle of the intestinal wall are the most frequent. Most CRC patients are already in middle or late stage when the tumor is discovered, and the proportion of middle or late stage patients in non-Sichuan provinces was even higher.
