ObjectiveTo explore the abilities of thesis writing of postgraduate medical freshpeople and their factors, and provide a basis for postgraduate education and course design of thesis writing.MethodsA designed questionnaire was administered to postgraduate medical freshpeople enrolled in West China Medical School of Sichuan University in 2020. The general characteristics, current status of skills or experiences related to thesis writing, and abilities including literature retrieval and reading, statistical analysis, diagramming, research paper writing, and journal selection and submission of the postgraduates were collected in September 2020. Logical regression was conducted to analyze the factors affecting the abilities of thesis writing.ResultsA total of 503 valid questionnaires were collected. Over one half of the graduate students (58.3%) were satisfied with the ability of literature retrieval and reading, with the highest score among the five abilities [median (lower quartile, upper quartile) was 3 (2, 3)]. Less than 20% of the students were satisfied with the remaining four abilities, with the lowest scores in the abilities of diagramming, research paper writing, and journal selection and submission [each median (lower quartile, upper quartile) was 1 (1, 2)]. Research experience and acknowledge of reporting guidelines were independent factors for all abilities related to thesis writing (P<0.05). Proficiency in statistical software was an independent factor for the abilities of data statistical analysis, diagramming, research paper writing, and journal selection and submission (P<0.05). Having published scientific paper was an independent factor for ability of journal selection and submission [odds ratio=4.695, 95% confidence interval (2.166, 10.180), P<0.001].ConclusionsThe postgraduate medical freshpeople of West China Medical School are not satisfied with the ability of statistical analysis, diagramming, paper writing, or journal selection and submission. Attention should be paid to research practice and learning of reporting guidelines, while statistical courses and diagramming courses should be set up expressly.
ObjectiveTo analyze the impact of disaster prevention and preparedness education courses on college students’ awareness, actions and abilities of disaster prevention and preparedness, so as to provide a reference for the establishment and optimization of disaster education-related courses in colleges.MethodsStudents who took the optional course “Disaster Preparedness Education” of Sichuan University in the fall semester of 2019 to 2020 were included. Questionnaires were issued before and after the course to compare the differences in awareness, actions and abilities of disaster prevention and preparedness of college students before and after the course. We also analyzed the differences between college students of different genders and college students of different grades.ResultsFinally, 148 college students were included. After the course, college students’ awareness scores (9.24±0.61 vs. 6.11±0.52), action scores (6.89±0.70 vs. 2.65±0.58) and ability scores (33.73±1.61 vs. 18.55±1.88) of disaster prevention and preparedness were improved compared to those before the course, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Before the course, boys’ disaster prevention and preparedness awareness score was higher than that of girls (6.48±0.56 vs. 5.23±0.44), the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05); there was no significant difference in the scores of actions or abilities of disaster prevention and preparedness between boys and girls (P>0.05). After the course, there was no statistically significant difference in any of the scores between boys and girls (P>0.05). Before and after the course, there was no statistically significant difference in any of the scores between the senior college students and the lower college students (P>0.05). College students’ overall satisfaction with disaster preparedness education was relatively high, with the highest scores for teaching methods and assessment methods.ConclusionDisaster preparedness education courses have a positive effect on improving the comprehensive qualities of college students’ disaster preparedness awareness, actions, and abilities, but it is necessary to attract more college students to participate and increase the scope of the course.

ObjectiveTo explore the training mode for improving the innovative scientific research ability of postgraduates of thoracic surgery.MethodsTwenty-two postgraduate students enrolled in the Department of Thoracic Surgery, Ruijin Hospital from September 2016 to June 2019 were targeted for training, and the teachers were 13 doctors in our department. Training methods included grant-based learning, formative learning and translational medical learning. In addition to the postgraduate education provided by the medical school, the training content also included more than 50 lectures about thoracic surgery, including surgical video explanation, perioperative management of thoracic surgery, interpretation of clinical guidelines, and intensive reading of the literature; it also included half-year clinical internship, 100 surgical operations and management of 5 medical beds in ward.ResultsClinical ability of the postgraduates were improved. Six postgraduate students enrolled in 2016 graduated successfully. They published 15 SCI papers and won more than 20 awards.ConclusionCultivating postgraduates of thoracic surgery oriented by innovative scientific research ability is conducive to the comprehensive understanding of thoracic diseases and the ability of innovative translation research.
ObjectiveTo investigate the effect of constructing new nurse training system on the competency of the nurses. MethodsA total of 192 new nurses who started their career in 2012 and 2013 were divided into two groups based on the time. Ninety-six of them who became nurses in 2012 were regarded as controls, and they received traditional training, while the other 96 new nurses of 2013 were chosen to be the experimental group, and they accepted the new training model for all-round training. Then, we compared the two groups of nurses in terms of their theoretical knowledge, operative skills and comprehensive ability. ResultsThe theoretical knowledge, operative skills and comprehensive ability scores of nurses in the experimental group were all significantly higher than the control group, while the error rate of the experimental group was significantly lower, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). ConclusionThe new nurse training system can improve the nurses' competency, which can provide a reference for standardized training of nurses.
Objective To investigate the core competencies of emergency specialized nurses and the influencing factors in Sichuan Province so as to provide a basis for improving the training systems. Methods The trainees who received specialized training in West China Hospital every March and September between 2012 and 2014 were investigated with questionnaire survey. Results A total of 270 questionnaires were given out, and 246 valid questionnaires were retrieved. The scores of emergency specialized nurses’ core competencies ranged from 165 to 258, with an average of 214.55±22.56. According to the scores, 4.88% of the emergency specialized nurses’ core competencies were at a low level, 67.07% were at a middle level and 28.5% were at a high level. The influencing factors of core competencies included education, professional title, position, level of hospitals and years of working experience in the emergency department. Conclusion Core competencies of emergency specialized nurses need to be further improved and the training systems need to be improved consistently.
Due to the decline of motor ability and the impact of the diseases, abnormalities in gait is common in the elderly population, which will raise the risk of fall and cause serious injury. This study focuses on the analysis of the gait kinematics parameters of normal adults’ gait, aiming to investigate the characteristics of gait parameters in different age groups and to explore the role of gait parameters in motor function assessment and clinical diagnosis. Based on the gait data gained by electronic walkway, the relationship among the toe out angles and their correlation with age and gender etc. were quantitatively analyzed. The results show that most normal subjects walk with positive toe out angles, and the angles increase with age. Such changes are slow in the young and middle age groups. However, the elevations of the left out toe angle and the angles between the feet are statistically significant after entering elder age ( >60 years). The results also suggest that the angle between the feet is a kind of practical gait parameter for varying applications. This study concludes that feet angle analysis is potential to provide a convenient and quantitative tool for the assessment of lower limb motor ability and the diagnosis of knee joint diseases.
